Truth 3 – Digital images lack authenticity.

This is a big issue. From the earliest history of photography the pictures produced were received by the viewer as an accurate representation of the subject. With the advent of digital the viewer now typically assumes that the picture does not represent the subject but rather some vision that the photographer wanted seen.

This is a complete reversal of how pictures produced using photography are first embraced by the viewer. It is a big issue because it supports the concepts presented in Digital Truth 1 that digital photography is a new art form distinct and separate from traditional film based photography. It means that the audience, like the viewers of paintings, assume that they are looking at something extracted from real life but that it does not represent a real subject.

Once again, new freedoms bring new challenges.
